Abstract

Classically, it is believed that the intent and purpose as well as achievements of public sector in Nigeria were not qualified on profit maximization but on socio-welfare service. Even the economic unit of public sector was run in a way to make only marginal profit. However, due to the dynamism of human nature, that classical notion is giving way to a contemporary notion which could be seen in the country during the Obasanjo regime (1999-2007) and subsequent regimes that followed which made privatization there cardinal programme. This development has even assumed a vigorous posture with the launching of National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) in 2004. Though in 1986, the issue of privatization was pursued by Babangida regime (1985-1993) as part of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) launched then. This paper therefore, intents an assessment of the impact of privatization of Nigerian economy on the management of public sector particularly in relation to the issues of right sizing, monitisation and due process and proffers solution for improvement.
