Transparency, a key Driver to Good governance and sustainable Development in Nigeria A critical appraisal of Enugu state Government 2015 – 2021

Abstract

Transparent government ensures that decisions taken and their enforcement follow rules and regulations. In this case, information is freely available and directly accessible to those who will be affected by such decisions and their enforcement. This is a key index of good governance. Good governance plays greater role in evolving sustainable development. Sustainable development embraces personality, infrastructural and super structural development. The study was guided by the three research questions and three hypotheses using descriptive survey research design. Questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The sample size of the study consisted of 500 drawn from the three senatorial zones of the state. Simple random sampling techniques was employed to select two local governments from each senatorial zone. The data collected were analyzed using mean, frequency and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using chi-square statistics. The findings indicated that principles of good governance especially transparency and accountability were used to provide dividends of democracy to boast economic activities in the state. The study recommended the applications of the principles of good governance especially transparency in governing all the states of the federation.
